FCC Issues 2007 EAS Handbooks

Hot off the press are the FCC’s 2007 Emergency Alert System handbooks.

Released by the commission’s Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau, this year’s missive includes new guidance for satellite radio, DBS and wireline video service providers. The guidance has been updated for radio, analog and digital TV as well as cable systems.

The handbooks provide instructions for national, state and local EAS activations and highlights testing procedures. The materials also include sample scripts that broadcasters and other participants may use during EAS activations and tests.

Copies of the handbooks must be located at “normal duty positions or EAS equipment locations when an operator is required to be on duty and be immediately available to staff responsible for authenticating messages and initiating actions,” according to the FCC.
