FCC Seeks Comments on Migratory Bird Study
By TVTechnology
published Earlier, FCC Chairman Michael Powell told Radio World Online the agency was interested in quantifying whether towers are a danger to migratory birds and staff began looking into the issue. Now, the agency seeks public comment on a study by Avatar Environmental.
Although the results are described as preliminary, the environmental risk consulting firm found more bird deaths occurred under certain conditions with low light and/or taller towers with lights and guyed towers. Certain species, such as warblers and thrushes, seemed more at risk. Avatar said more study is needed.
Comments are due Jan. 13 (WT Docket 03-187.)
