First Subscription Broadband Movie Service Launched
Premium movie provider STARZ! and digital media service provider RealNetworks have teamed up to launch the first subscription movie service to high-speed customers.
Powered by RealPlayer 10 Technology, customers can watch new films such as "Gangs of New York" and classic films like "Taxi Driver" as many times as they wish, after the initial download.
"In the cable and satellite world the 'all you can eat' subscription business model has proven much more popular than the transactional pay-per-view mode," said Starz CEO John J Sie.
STARZ! Ticket on Real Movies gives subscribers in the United States unlimited access-via a 600 Kbps broadband connection-to a rotating library of movies for $12.95 per month. Customers have the option to watch movies on their PC or on a television linked to a PC with an S-video cable.
Other features include fast-forward, rewind and pause, the ability to download movies to three personal computers, and the ability to schedule downloads overnight to maximize bandwidth usage.
