Former Texas Utility Official Could Head FCC
Administration officials say in the event Bush serves a second term as president, a former chairwoman of the Texas Public Utility Commission could be his top choice for chairman of the FCC. That's according to a report in the New York Times, which pegs Becky Armendariz Klein as being nominated for the top commission slot if she loses her congressional race.
Klein, a Republican, is challenging Democrat Lloyd Doggett in the 25th congressional district, which goes from Austin down to the Mexican border town of McAllen. Klein has raised about $450,000, compared to more than $1 million raised by Doggett, according to the Times. Much of Klein's backing is from telecommunications and power companies.
Observers speculate current FCC Chairman Michael Powell would step down later this year; a charge repeatedly denied by his office.
