Fourteen Companies Respond to CableLabs' OCAP RFP
Fourteen companies have so far participated in Cable Television Laboratories Inc.'s request for proposal (RFP) on industry implementation of its OpenCable Application Platform (OCAP). OCAP is a middleware system for advanced interactive OpenCable host devices, including set-top boxes and integrated DTVs.
The RFP was released to spur industry participation in OCAP, which will speed up the ability of cable operators to launch new services. Canal+ Technologies, Microsoft, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer and others have signed on.
Several companies are offering support and tool kits for application developers. Some companies have set an OCAP target debut date in the first quarter of 2003.
