Google names ITN news launch partner for Geolocation API
Google has named ITN as its global news launch partner for its WiFi-enhanced Geolocation API at the Google Developer Day in Milan, Italy. This enhancement to the Gears Geolocation API allows users to be located to within 100m on both laptops and mobile phones. Gears is a browser plug-in that lets users access information offline or view content based on geographical location.
The Geolocation API pinpoints the location of the mobile cell or WiFi access point and highlights ITN news stories near that location on Google Maps or Google Earth. From the location interface, it’s easy to visit the ITN Web site to read a story or play an associated video.
The Geolocation API allows content providers like ITN to easily develop location-aware services without complex and potentially costly arrangements with third-party service providers or mobile operators.
