The developers of the AACS copy protection system just issued another patch for their breached technology. This time, the hackers broke it in a single day.
AACS, used in HD-DVD and Blu-ray discs, was supposed to be the toughest encryption available. But hackers have repeatedly broken it, allowing digital content to be pirated.
Ars Technica reported that hacker “BtCB” posted the new decryption key for AACS on the Freedom to Tinker Web site, just one day after the AACS Licensing Authority (AACS LA) issued the key.
The hacker posted the 128-bit key as a method of decrypting a small haiku that they placed on the same page, noting that it may have been the same key that would decrypt new HD discs as well.
Ars Technica published a simplified HD decryption diagram, which they said was courtesy of arnezami, a user of the Doom 9 “DVD conversion” forum on the Web.
