Harmonic intros MPEG/IP-based video mosaic solution
The new IP-based ProStream 8000 tiles several channels within a single high-quality digital video stream.
Harmonic has announced a multichannel digital mosaic system that integrates with video headend, transport and customer premises equipment now deployed by cable, satellite, telco and other video service providers.
The new IP-based ProStream 8000, an MPEG-in/MPEG-out software solution, tiles several channels within a single high-quality digital video stream, enhancing the overall viewer experience with a composite multiprogram view.
In addition, the ProStream 8000 makes it possible to increase revenue from subscription services, VOD and advertising by enabling promotions and previews, regional customizations, additional paid programming formats, as well as specialty program groupings including sports, news and children’s channels.
The ProStream 8000 enables integration with a service provider’s existing digital television infrastructure including middleware applications, program guides, compression and multiplexing systems. Each multichannel mosaic is transmitted as yet another channel in the line-up — representing a complete MPEG stream with all of the associated metadata — to ensure compatibility with existing set-top boxes and televisions.
This IP-based solution allows operators to quickly and easily introduce, modify and remove value-added channel mosaics. Interoperability with third-party program guides makes it possible to dynamically include and exclude channels from a mosaic based on schedule, in order to maintain consistency with the theme or focus of a given mosaic.
