HD programming service subscriptions continue to lag

A little more than half of HDTV set owners in the United States actually subscribe to an HD programming services, according to the findings of an online survey conducted in December 2007.

ABI Research last week released the findings and found that while 41 percent of TV owners have an HDTV, only 56 percent of those HDTV owners subscribe to an HD service package.

While younger viewers show some interest in “next-generation” TV services, overall interest in such services is generally low, ABI Research said. One exception, however, is the ability to move content sourced from the Internet from the PC to the TV.

The study found that 66 percent of respondents subscribe to some form of pay-TV service, and of those, 60 percent receive at least one additional service, such as telephone or Internet, from their provider. However, only 54 percent declared themselves satisfied overall with their providers.
