Home video sales set records; 3 billion DVDs sold
The home entertainment industry has been through “an exciting and wild ride” in the first half of 2004, soaring to a record $11.31 billion in home video sales and rental revenue, reports Video Store Magazine.
The magazine joined DEG: The Digital Entertainment Group in presenting first-half results during the second annual DVD Retail Summit held in conjunction with Home Entertainment 2004 in Las Vegas.
Predictions are that another record-breaking year is expected for home video. DEG executive director Amy Jo Donner revealed that studios shipped approximately 649 million DVDs to retail in the first six months of 2004, a 52 percent increase over the same period last year, according to figures compiled for DEG by Kaplan, Swicker and Simha.
Software shipments in North America have now topped three billion units since the format’s inception in 1997.
