IBC2005: Sigma Designs Unveils New SOC Chip for IPTV HD
Promising the possibility of providing multiple streams of HD in various formats, Sigma Designs demonstrated its SMP8634 media processor at IBC2005 in Amsterdam this week, using the new class of system-on-chip (SOC) based, IPTV set-top box by Scientific-Atlanta.
As a part of an overall push to deliver next-generation video services on a worldwide basis, including HD, telephony interests are preparing to deploy IPTV with increased performance from a new generation of media processor chips which supports advanced video decoding and display options. Next-generation IPTV schemes are designed to allow access to a broader array of TV programming, VOD, interactive, and other advanced features.
The platform demonstrated at IBC--based on Sigma's SMP8634 media processor--included multiple streams of HD video in all major formats, and provided mechanisms for content security, according to published reports.
