IBC2005: Tandberg to Display MPEG-4 Advanced Encoding
At the IBC 2005 in Amsterdam next month, Tandberg Television (Booth 1:461-Hall) plans to demo its ultra-low bit rate MPEG-4 AVC HD encoder, which reduces HD bandwidth under 8MB--thereby enabling 6 HD channels and 6 SD channels on one multiplexed satellite transponder.
Apart from IBC, Tandberg said European pay-TV operators BSkyB and Premiere are now using its HD MPEG-4 AVC compression to drive their own ongoing HD roll-outs, which are scheduled to begin in 2006.
Also, Tandberg Television recently received another order from DirecTV to deliver the second phase of its MPEG-4 HD compression systems during the fall to support the American DBS firm's HD buildout. Earlier this year, DirecTV commissioned the first of 26 HD-enabled transponders from Tandberg.
