InfoSpace to sell mobile business to Motricity

InfoSpace a developer of mobile- and PC-content navigation tools, is shedding its mobile business and has agreed to sell it to Motricity for $135 million. The announcement follows the recent sale of the company’s online directory business for $225 million to Idearc.

The company’s mobile services division provides managed services infrastructure for mobile carriers, including technologies and services spanning mobile search, storefronts, portals and messaging services.

The acquisition will expand Motricity’s client base to include 11 of the 13 top carriers in the North America, including AT&T, Verizon Wireless, Sprint, T-Mobile, Bell Mobility, Tracfone and Alltel, among others. Motricity will also power five of the top six carrier start screens with its mobile portal product, Motricity Fuel. Motricity Fuel is a suite of solutions that includes content storefront, portal, search, community and messaging services.

InfoSpace plans to focus solely on its online search business, which represents more than 60 percent of its revenue.
