A year from now a 50-inch high-definition television set based on Intel’s LCOS—liquid crystal on silicon technology—will cost less than $1,800, Intel’s chief executive predicted last week at the CES show in Las Vegas.
“This will change big-screen TV economics,” said Paul Otellini, Intel’s president and CEO.
“What LCOS does better than other technology is it takes advantage of Moore’s Law and it takes advantage of what we do well, which is build silicon,” Otellini said.
Intel has begun a corporate migration toward a wider role in the consumer electronics industry to include television displays, set-top boxes and wireless home networks. The company showed an “Entertainment PC,” a prototype wireless home entertainment distribution center. It is expected to be marketed under several brand names beginning mid-2004.
