June Was a Record Month for Video-on-Demand
PORTLAND,ORE.: June was a high-water mark for video-on-demand, according to multiscreen metric taker Rentrak. The firm counted 589 million transactions from reporting cable TV providers during the month, generating an average of 16.5 minutes of on-demand viewing per day for each active set-top box. Viewing time was a shade below 15 minutes for April and May; around 15.6 in March and 16 in February.
June’s total transactions represented a 15 percent increase over last year, Rentrak said, and a 16 percent increase in the number of unique set-top boxes accessing video-on-demand. Free VOD kids content generated 7 percent more traffic than in May, its strongest month of the year with more than 106 million transactions.
Rentrak said June is historically a strong month for transactional, on-demand viewing, and this year’s results bear out the trend, with June as the busiest month for VOD so far in 2009.
