KCAL 9 HD Debuts in L.A. for Pro Sports
Time Warner and CBS jointly announced the launch of KCAL 9 HD, a new channel for subscribers of Time Warner Cable Southern California. Available as part of Time Warner's basic HD service, the new HD venue (Channel 409) debuted on the evening of Feb. 2 with the Los Angeles Lakers' NBA game at Indiana, according to KCAL-TV.
The broadcaster said all 18 remaining regular-season Laker games (plus the play-off games, if any) will also be aired in 1080i. KCAL-TV is the team's flagship station and has been airing its games for 30 years.
KCAL 9 HD also will carry all its schedule of Los Angeles Dodgers baseball games this season in HD--premiering on March 30 with the "Freeway Series" game between the Dodgers and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
KCAL 9 HD also will begin producing its local newscasts in HD this spring, after moving into a new HD broadcast facility in Studio City, Calif. Other HD channels in the mammoth L.A. market available on Time Warner Cable include KCBS (Channel 402), KNBC (Channel 404), KABC (Channel 407), KTTV (Channel 411) and KCET (Channel 412).
