KES 2006: LGE Plays Catch-up With 50-inch PDP
LG Electronics will unveil its 50-inch HD plasma display panel (PDP) this week at the Korea Electronics Show (KES) in Seoul, South Korea. The company said it will begin mass-producing the new model in the second half of 2007.
LGE's current 50- and 60-inch PDPs are HD-ready and feature a resolution of 1366 x 768. The company's 71-inch PDP monitor (model 71PY1M) features 1920 x 1080, according to the LGE Web site.
The company is a bit behind its competitors in offering a full HD PDP lineup of models. Pioneer, for example, showed a 50-inch HD PDP last January at CES in Las Vegas. And Matsushita (Panasonic) recently rolled out its own line of HD PDP in 50-, 58-, 65- and 103-inch models.
In July, Matsushita led with 33.5 percent of global PDP shipments, followed by LGE with 30 percent and Samsung with 21.4 percent, according to Asian industry analyst DisplayBank.
