KNPB Taps Omneon for New Digital Channel
Reno, Nev.-based PBS station KNPB Channel 5 has selected Omneon's Spectrum media server system to broadcast a new digital channel that will include locally produced content and national material.
The Spectrum system is controlled by a Crispin automation system and will handle the playout to air of one of KNPB's planned four digital channels. The remaining three digital channels will pass through national feeds and simulcast local analog programming.
Part of the reason the station chose the Omneon system was its scalability and the ability to use the same common storage arrays in the Omneon system for SD or HD material as needed, according to KNPB officials. The system installed at the station includes an HD I/O, which will be used initially for time-delayed playback of network content.
