Korea Reaffirms ATSC for DTV
Kim Tae-gyu, writing in Korea Times, reports Korean Information-Communication Minister Chin Dae-je said in an interview with reporters before leaving for the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, "For the sake of policy consistency, we will maintain the U.S. standard. We must consider the huge cost... of switching over to the European system." This support for the ATSC terrestrial DTV standard is in response to pressure by local broadcasters (see RF Report for January 5, 2004) to switch to the European DVB-T standard, which they contend is better suited for mobile and portable applications than the U.S. system.
See Kim Tae-guy's article, Gov't Sticks to US Standard for Digital TV for more details on this latest development in the Korean DTV transition.
