A benefit of the CEA 80 is that the tube can continue to be used if the transmitter is upgraded to digital service at a later date.
The new CEA 80 is based on the technology developed for L-3's CEA 130, which is deployed in digital service in nine transmitters located in the United States. The CEA 80 demonstrates efficiency improvements of as much as 50 percent over standard Inductive Output Tube (IOT) technology in NTSC service. This translates to a $17,000 per year per tube savings in electricity costs.
In both NTSC analog service and 8VSB digital service, the CEA technology from L-3 promises to offer considerable energy savings over the life of a transmitter.
