This year’s Eurovision Song Contest saw the ballad “Molitva” (“Prayer”), performed by 22-year-old Serbian Marija Serifovic, take home the top prize. Entries from the Ukraine finished second and Russia third. In all, 24 countries lined up to compete in the finals of one of Europe’s most important music contests. Finnish broadcaster YLE coordinated the live event for 9000 fans in Helsinki stadium and a global TV audience.
YLE appointed Audio Broadcast Services (ABS), Lawo’s rental company, to equip the main music control room and the master control room on a rental basis. Signal distribution was handled by a Lawo Nova73 HD routing system, which supplied the master control room, and integrated four Lawo consoles from three generations. The main music control room was equipped with an mc²90, Lawo’s flagship console. This desk supplied a 5.1 surround mix to the HD-1 OB truck rented from Prisma, which used a Lawo mc²66 console to add the ambience and presenter feeds. The production in HDTV and 5.1 surround was also uplinked in these formats. During the contest, two other YLE-owned OB trucks were in place for radio broadcast and backup — one fitted with a Lawo mc²80 and another with an mc80 — making the entire broadcast a showpiece for three generations of Lawo mixing consoles.
