Leading mobile companies endorse OMA BCAST mobile TV implementation
Twelve of the world's largest mobile companies recently announced their support for the mobile TV implementation profile developed within the Broadcast Mobile Convergence Forum (bmcoforum). The profile simplifies the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) Mobile Broadcast Services Enabler Suite (BCAST) specification, enabling quicker deployment of mobile television services.
The main features supported by the profile include advanced service and program guide functionality, support for multiple broadcast technologies and support for content and service protection using the Smart Card profile, based on the (U)SIM Card or the DRM profile (based on OMA DRM v2.0).
The OMA BCAST specification also includes support for DVB-H broadcast networks and cellular systems, as well as the 3G Mobile Broadcast Service (MBMS). Industry adoption of the specification, especially in Europe, would allow broadcasters and other mobile TV service providers to extend current business models and expand current and future services.
The profile defined by the bmcoforum is the first implementation subset of the Mobile Broadcast Services Enabler Suite 1.0 (OMA BCAST 1.0) developed by the Open Mobile Alliance.
