LG Electronics, Netflix; Macrovision, CinemaNow advance online entertainment options
Netflix and LG Electronics announced plans last week to work together to develop a consumer STB to stream high-def movies and other content to their HDTVs.
On the same day, Jan. 3, Macrovision and CinemaNow announced the integration of their technologies to allow consumers to download premium video content from CinemaNow to Macrovision-enabled devices like DTVs, STBs and network attached storage devices.
The Macrovision-CinemaNow collaboration requires consumers to register Macrovision-enabled hardware on the CinemaNow Web site to gain access to its library of online movies, television shows and music videos. The technology integration brings together Macrovision’s Connected Platform technology and CinemaNow’s digital distribution technology.
The Netflix-LG Electronics technology collaboration will allow Netflix subscribers to watch movies streamed from the Netflix Web site on their large-screen home theater HDTVs, in addition to the current capability to watch movies on their PCs.
According to an LG Electronics spokesman, the STB is expected to be released sometime this summer. Pricing and other details about the device were not available.
