MediaFLO USA selects Thomson transmitters for mobile video service

MediaFLO USA, a subsidiary of Qualcomm, has placed an order for multiple Ultimate UHF transmitters from Thomson, each equipped with FLO technology.

The Ultimate 5.2kW transmitters, with the embedded FLO exciter, will help MediaFLO distribute high-quality streaming video and audio content to a consumer's handheld device. It will also support MediaFLO USA's nationwide delivery of mobile wireless multimedia multicasting services.

All Thomson DTV transmitters feature Emmy award-winning Digital Adaptive Precorrection (DAP) linear and nonlinear signal correction technology, which provides simplified system setup and the maximum RF performance.

The announcement follows many months of co-development between the former Thales Broadcast & Multimedia business unit (now the Grass Valley business within Thomson) and Qualcomm. The development combines Thomson's Sirius digital TV exciter with Qualcomm's FLO technology to create a full series of FLO-compatible DTV transmitters.

Specific performance features of FLO technology in a 6MHz channel include support for transmitting up to 20 streaming channels of QVGA-quality (320 x 240 pixels); video at up to 30fps; 10 stereo audio channels (HE AAC+ parametric stereo); and up to 800 minutes of distributed Clipcast content per day (short-format video clips).

Thomson is an active member of the FLO Forum, a multi-company initiative committed to advancing the global standardization of FLO technology, including compliance and certification benchmarks for the technology.
