Mitsubishi Develops Blu-ray Player for Vehicles
Video in 1080p may soon be coming to a car near you. But it may come faster if you live in Asia. Mitsubishi Electric Corp. said it has developed a small Blu-ray player designed for the vehicular environment that requires about one-third the footprint of its Blu-ray player for the home.
A prototype of the future product measures 50-by-178-by-180 mm and will support BD-ROM, BD-R and BD-RE (BD stands for Blu-ray Disc). Initial shipments to retailers in Japan and elsewhere in Asia are projected for “sometime in fiscal 2009,” according to online reports.
The new mobile disc player likely will be used in tandem with Mitsubishi’s existing vehicle navigation systems—although the new player will reportedly use the Linux operating system, while most car navigation systems use Windows CE.
No price points and no shipment dates for North America and Europe have been released.
