Idetic's MobiTV is now streaming live television to customers on the Sprint PCS Video network in the United States. Based on Idetic’s Far Reach technology platform, MobiTV now handles about 20 channels and is designed to scale up to 150 million wireless subscribers.
Currently available at $9.99 a month on the Sprint PCS Vision network, MobiTV subscribers can view news, sports and entertainment channels such as MSNBC, CNBC, NBC (Mobile), ABC News, CNET, FOX Sports and The Discovery Channel.
MobiTV currently supports more than 20 different phone models and is Java- and BREW-compatible. Its development team is working to take this service to the next level through higher frame rates, enhanced picture quality, and an expansion of the base-channel line-up.
However, according the company’s Web site, the service currently has some severe limitations. Customers on the Sprint network cannot take a phone call while watching TV. Currently, phones running on the Sprint network will not interrupt the TV stream for incoming calls. If the subscriber’s service includes voice mail, calls will go directly to it.
The company also acknowledged inconsistent service over the Sprint network and short breaks in TV audio due to network interruptions and occasional freeze frames rather than moving pictures.
