More Networks Carrying Dolby Digital 5.1
More than two dozen North American television networks are now broadcasting in Dolby Digital 5.1, according to Dolby. The latest networks to go Dolby Digital include TNT, Starz! and Canada's Chum Television's Channel City with The WB to join the ranks this fall.
"Our goal is to provide TNT in HD viewers with high-quality, three-dimensional sound," said Dan Darling, senior vice president technology and production operations for Turner Network. "Dolby Digital 5.1 provides our viewers with a sound experience that complements our realistic, high-def visual experience."
TNT is showing all programs and commercials in Dolby Digital 5.1 and Starz launched its Encore HD service in March for both East and West Coast feeds. Encore HD will show first-run and recent movies without commercials.
Dolby Digital 5.1 offers sound by delivering five full-range audio channels--left, center, right, left surround and right surround-- and a lower-frequency effects channel.
