NAB Ponies $750,000 for Mobile Initiative
Two technologies have been created for transmitting digital TV signals to mobile devices. Mobile-Pedestrian-Handheld, or MPH, developed by LG and Harris; and A-VSB, developed by Samsung and Rohde & Schwarz. Both were demonstrated at NAB2007, and both are under consideration for standardization by the Advanced Systems Television Committee.
The NAB is putting it’s money where it’s mobile is. The broadcast lobby board allocated $750,000 to the Open Mobile Video Coalition during its October meeting.
The OMVC, led by Brandon Burgess, CEO of ION Media, represents 422 commercial TV stations and 361 public stations. Burgess recently told TVB
that mobile receivers could represent a universe twice that of U.S. TV households, which comprises about 111 million homes.
