Britain’s National Film and Television School (NFTS) has purchased three Euphonix System 5 digital mixing audio systems for its newly expanded film mixing department. Each console will be a 24-fader, 78-channel system with digital audio workstation (DAW) control of Nuendo, Pro Tools and Logic Pro software.
Jon Houchin, head of engineering at the NFTS, said, “The Euphonix System 5 consoles were selected in the face of strong competition. The desk layout is very friendly and accessible — ideal for teaching the craft of mixing. Euphonix have pioneered a design concept that fully utilizes DAW control, from the editing suites to the final mix theater. The System 5 consoles will play a central role in delivering the school’s modernized sound and music post-production workflow and training.”
The Euphonix System 5 digital audio mixing system is specifically designed for intuitive audio post-production and music applications, with integrated machine control and mix-automation system. Its EuCon protocol extends the control capabilities beyond the dedicated DSP cores to the outside world, bringing any DAW track onto the console surface for full control during mixing. The DAWs communicate with the console via the EuCon high-speed Ethernet control protocol, which can seamlessly connect any DAW format.
A growing student enrollment prompted NFTS to expand from a single 5.1 dubbing theater and a smaller stereo theater to three 5.1 theaters. The three System 5-equipped theaters will offer NFTS flexibility in scheduling and workflow efficiency for the sharp increase in mixing graduation films. The first console will be delivered this November for a January start date, while the other two desks will be installed in March 2009.
