NBC Universal launches mobile movie clip service
NBC Universal’s Mobile Entertainment division this month launched Hollywood Movie Minutes on Mobile, a service that lets people watch streaming video clips of movies from the Universal Studios film archive on their mobile phones. Universal Mobile Entertainment is using I-play’s UNITY content delivery platform to stream the clips.
The clips are currently available to select Sprint, Verizon Wireless, Rogers Cable and Amp’d Mobile customers on a pay-per-clip basis. Among the offerings are scenes from “The 40 Year-Old Virgin,” “The Fast and the Furious,” “Animal House” and “The Breakfast Club,” with new movie clips being added each day from the Hollywood Minutes Library. Customers can search for clips by theme, genre or tag and bookmark favorites to build a personal video library.
I-play is best known as a mobile gaming provider, but it has been branching out into other forms of mobile entertainment. It created the I-player application for the UNITY content delivery platform for this purpose. The I-player powers the streaming capabilities of the Hollywood Movie Minutes on Mobile service, as well as such interactive functionalities as personal library building and clip bookmarking.
Users access the service by typing in their cell phone numbers at promo.iplay.com/us/sprint-movieminutes. They are then sent a text message that includes a link for downloading the I-player application.
