NBC Universal to use Snell & Wilcox standards converters for ’08 Olympics
NBC Universal has placed an order with Snell & Wilcox for motion compensated frame rate standards converters for use during its coverage of the 2008 Olympic Games. Included in the deal is the new Alchemist Ph.C – HD high-definition frame rate standards converter.
Coverage of the 2008 Olympics will be originated in 1080i/50 and 625/50. For NBC’s U.S. audience, the network will convert material to 1080i/60 and 525/60. As a result, NBC will convert virtually every SD and HD feed from the 2008 Olympics through the Snell & Wilcox frame rate converters prior to delivery to U.S. viewers.
Alchemist Ph.C is built on Snell & Wilcox’s Ph.C motion estimation technology, and the newly released Alchemist Ph.C – HD takes this technology into the HD realm, offering bidirectional HDTV frame-rate conversion for both the 1080i and 720p broadcast standards. The platform also provides SD standards conversion between 50Hz and 60Hz material, as well as HDTV up/down/crossconversion.
