NBCU Taps Tandberg for New HD Channels’ Launch
Tandberg Television is equipping several of NBC Universal’s new HD networks with compression products and other services, it said. NBCU outlets affected include Bravo HD, USA HD, Sci-Fi HD, and CNBC HD+ which premiered in early October (TV Technology, Oct. 17, 2007).
Tandberg Television, part of the Ericsson Group of Oslo, Norway, said the arrangement will enable NBCU’s HD channels to be made available to cable, DBS and IPTV service providers throughout the United States.
NBCU’s use of Tandberg’s DVB-S2 8PSK modulators (designed to increase a satellite transponder’s throughput) to distribute HD programming marks the equipment’s first implementation in America, Tandberg said. The firm’s system also includes MPEG-2 HD multiplexes.
