New England Cable News (NECN) is using Telecast Fiber Systems' CopperHead fiber optic ENG/SNG camera transceiver for coverage of live news and sports events. Jointly owned by Comcast Corporation and the Hearst Corporation, NECN is the largest regional 24-hour cable news network in the country, serving 2.8 million households in 820 communities throughout New England.
By multiplexing two-way ENG/SNG camera signals onto a flexible, lightweight fiber cable, the CopperHead enables the Boston-based, 24-hour news network to capture video and audio signals, even in challenging production environments that require long cable runs.
Matt Malone, NECN's satellite truck operator, said the network has tested the CopperHead successfully at a distance of more than 4,000 feet using four strands in the same bundle, looped end-to-end. And because the it is a fiber optic-based system, it eliminates the usual production concerns of audio hum, ground loops, line loss, equalizing DAs or other equipment.
