New HD DVD Firmware to Enable Online Features
The depth of technical sophistication of both HD DVD and Blu-ray Disc continue to be slowly uncovered through advances in hardware and firmware (and a studio’s willingness to pay for inclusion of added special features)--an evolution that will be helped by the latest update for second-generation HD DVD players from Toshiba.
In a race to outdo the competition in title releases and special feature options, Toshiba’s firmware update will enable users to retrieve additional content online pertaining to particular titles. The update also is supposed to clean up some technical issues, according to Engadget.
The latest firmware--which can be downloaded to any second-gen Toshiba player--pertains to a few titles for now, including “Blood Diamond” from Warner Brothers that has just been released on HD DVD.
The firmware update is being issued to help alleviate a few lingering technical glitches, as well, most notably the “chroma bug.”
