Omneon expands HD format support

Adding to its HD capabilities, Omneon Video Networks announced enhancements to its SDTI media interface adapter (MediaPort MIP 1002) to support Panasonic’s compressed HD format, DVCPRO HD. With this addition to the product line, Omneon's SPECTRUM series is the first media server capable of supporting all HD broadcast formats simultaneously, including MPEG, HDCAM and DVCPRO HD.

Incorporating the company’s “Smart Scalability,” the Omneon SPECTRUM allows broadcasters to deploy server infrastructure for HD and SD playback today and gain the flexibility to add channels or services in the future.

The company also introduced native support for MXF across its entire line of Omneon Spectrum media servers, giving customers the choice to select either QuickTime or MXF as the media wrapper format for material stored within an Omneon system. With MXF support as a native media format, Omneon is able to eliminate all forms of format conversion or transcoding when working with the new MXF format.

At NAB, Omneon showed a variety of media servers supporting the entire broadcast workflow, from production to distribution to archive. The company’s strategy, according to Larry Kaplan, Omneon’s president, is to promote third-party companies to port their “best of breed” applications to Omneon’s servers.

Omneon SPECTRUM systems range from large multichannel systems providing a shared storage infrastructure for any area of a broadcast facility to the new Omneon SPECTRUM ES edge server for local station broadcasting. The new SPECTRUM ES is a fully capable, six-channel playout server with up to 72 hours of 12Mb/s video, in only three rack units and with the lowest cost-per-channel available.
