Over-the-top video downloads to exceed 2.4 billion in 2012, says ABI Research
Video rental, download to own and subscription models will all get significant traction as new services bringing online video to the television set begin to flourish, according to ABI Research.
However, the greatest number of downloads will be through rental, in particular for online movie rentals, says the research and analytical firm. Overall online pay video streams for over-the-top video downloads will grow from 215 million in 2008 to more than 2.4 billion in 2012, with rentals accounting for about half.
However, ABI Research has identified a couple of challenges for over-the-top video, including competition from legacy VOD services and unattractive ownership and rental terms offered by the studios.
ABI Research has published “Broadband Video and Internet TV,” a report examining the online video market, including consumer adoption of Internet video to back-end enabling service providers.
