Panasonic Acquires Sanyo
Panasonic, one of the largest makers of HD products globally, has begun the process of buying Sanyo, which will grow Panasonic (until recently known formally as Matsushita) into a potential CE manufacturing juggernaut at a particularly rough time for the world economy.
Panasonic first showed an interest in taking over Sanyo several weeks ago. Sanyo has been struggling recently with the production of a different type of panels—solar—as part of its strategy to go green.
Panasonic makes Panasonic- and Viera-brand HD sets and Blu-ray Disc players under its own name and the Diga brand. The takeover was reported to have cost Panasonic about $9 billion.
