Panasonic beefs up features on its D-5 mastering VTR

Panasonic's D-5 HD multi-format/multi-standard mastering VTR, the AJ-HD3700, has been upgraded to an “A” version with new features targeted at enhanced international applications.

The AJ-HD3700A provides full-resolution 4:2:2 digital 10-bit component recording with 74.25 MHz (Y) and 37.125 MHz (Pb/Pr) sampling in HD formats.

The AJ-HD3700A VTR can record and playback both 625 PAL and 525 NTSC D-5 cassettes as well as D-5 tapes from all previous versions of this workhorse production format. Now, standard definition, non-compressed content designed for distribution in PAL locations can be edited and mastered on the same VTR used for NTSC distribution.

The AJ-HD3700A provides full-resolution 4:2:2 digital 10-bit component recording with 74.25 MHz (Y) and 37.125 MHz (Pb/Pr) sampling in HD formats. It meets HD studio standards for production, editing and broadcasting and adds eight discrete channels of audio in standard definition, a feature already available for HD.

It can record and play 1080/23.98p and 1080/24p HD formats. Its progressive image recording of 24-fps film sources without frame-rate conversion allows digital mastering of film content, such as movies and commercials, into formats suitable for broadcasting and DVD packaging.

The AJ-HD3700A records up to 124 minutes in 1080/59.94i, 720/59.94p and 480/59.94i formats. Recording times up to 149 minutes in 1080/50i, 1080/25p, 112 minutes in 625/50i and 155 minutes in 24p are also possible. The rack-mountable 5-RU size VTR also features variable-speed slow motion (-1 to +2) with auto tracking heads. The unit’s shuttle search runs at 50 times normal speed in both forward and reverse. Editing functions include assemble and insert edit, audio split, and variable memory. Its 0-frame editing accuracy is assured when using the SMPTE/EBU time code.

Offering complete compatibility with existing D-5 production libraries, the AJ-HD3700A is not only capable of playing back existing 525-line and 625-line D-5 and D-5 HD cassettes, it also offers progressive scan (24p) input/output as well as segmented frame (24Psf) I/O for 1080p production environments. The SMPTE Standard 292M serial digital link for HD-SDI is supported at 1.5Gb/s. In standard definition, D-5 recording is non-compressed with full editing features.
