Panasonic's Varicam used for PBS design:e2 series

A six-part PBS environmental series, “design:e2,” was shot exclusively with Panasonic's AJ-HDC27 Varicam HD camera.

The series was produced by Manhattan-based production company kontentreal, which also created the related Web site www.design-e2.com, featuring Varicam-shot podcasts.

Rob Humphreys, director of photography, used a crew of two to record 60 interviews in multiple international cities in five countries over an eight-week period. Extensive B-roll locations ranged from skyscraper rooftops to hiking the Great Wall in China.

Humphreys said the style for the series was defined by the Varicam's variable frame capability, which he used for time lapses and slow-motion effects throughout the shoot. At times, the camera would be locked off on a city street and the same frame was shot at 4 fps, 24fps, 48fps and 60fps, and then overlaid in post.
