Paramount Releases First HD DVD-Only Title
Paramount made good on its recent surprise announcement that it will issue its new titles only in the HD DVD format, by releasing the Will Ferrell comedy “Blades of Glory” in the studio’s new preferred format this week.
Originally, Paramount had planned to release the movie title in both formats, but opted out of offering a Blu-ray Disc version—although its announcement giving HD DVD the exclusive nod over Blu-ray was made only days prior to the movie’s release date (Aug. 28), according to High-Def Digest (which, incidentally, gave “Blades of Glory” four out of five stars in its review for the disc’s technical HD video and audio qualities).
Aug. 20, both Paramount Pictures and DreamWorks Animation SKG disclosed they would issue titles exclusively in the HD DVD format from now on (TV Technology, Aug. 22.)
The exclusivity, however, does not pertain to any Steven Spielberg films, which will continue to be issued in both next-gen formats.
