Patriots-Giants game first network NFL simulcast since Super Bowl I
CBS and NBC, along with NFL Network, simulcast HD coverage of the New England Patriots at New York Giants game Dec. 29.
The CBS-NBC simulcast of the game was the first since the telecast of Super Bowl Jan. 15, 1967, at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, and the first-ever three-network simulcast. The NFL agreed to the simulcast after congressional pressure to offer wider distribution of the game. Originally, the game was to be carried only on the NFL Network, which is available in about one-third of the country.
Some major cable operators, including Comcast and Time Warner, have resisted carrying the NFL Network. The league’s decision to authorize the simulcast relieved the pressure it felt from lawmakers and fans over the game being blacked across most of the country.
