Penthera inks engineering services deal with Modeo
Modeo and Penthera Technologies have entered into an engineering services agreement to enhance the capabilities of Modeo’s mobile TV service. Modeo is currently beta testing the DVB-H-based service in New York City.
The agreement includes software enhancements to Modeo’s broadcast headend and its smart phone user interface software, enabling it to offer mobile digital video recording (DVR) functionality to its customers. Customers can record and store their favorite programs on their mobile TV devices on a scheduled basis, as well as perform impulse recording while viewing live programming. They can also pause, rewind and fast forward both live and stored content. Modeo will also be able to mediacast content, which is the broadcasting of individual content segments such as movies, songs and primetime episodes that are then stored on the consumer’s device. The content can be tailored to the individual preference of each user. The broadcast headend improvements are expected to also provide Modeo with the ability to insert advertisements into both live and mediacast programming.
Much of the improvements are enabled by Penthera’s Mobile Broadcast Platform version 2.0 (MBP 2.0), which allows for the tricklcasting — or broadcasting over time — of files stored in a subscriber’s mobile device.
