Pioneer Providing iTV 'Compass'

Developers of interactive cable features will be able to navigate across cable platforms and into viewers' living rooms with a new program by Pioneer Digital Technologies, the company said.

The new third-party developer program, Compass, supports the integration and delivery of new interactive services through Pioneer's Passport navigation suite and its Voyager series of digital set-top boxes.

The company, a division of Pioneer Corp., said Compass is the first program that allows developers to integrate applications across all cable TV platforms.

Developers who enroll in the program will have access to extensive documentation, sample code, a network developer's kit with APIs, dedicated engineering support, application integration certification and integration lab time on a cable headend. The developers will also have access to a Compass certifying logo.

"This is a natural evolution in the industry, and we are proud to be the first to provide such a complex and dynamic offering," said Neil Jones, senior vice president of Pioneer Digital Technologies. "Although we have been working with developers for some time, we are now formalizing our program to put additional structure and resources at the disposal of the industry's best hardware and software technologists and architects."
