Testifying before the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s Telecommunications and the Internet Subcommittee last week, Thomson Vice President of Communications and Government Affairs David Arland told lawmakers that RCA would introduce an SD digital television set later this year for less than $300.
The set offers one low-cost alternative to households that rely solely on over-the-air transmission for television and would be stranded otherwise when stations cease analog transmission.
Developed and manufactured by TTE, a 27in version of the set would cost less than $300 and a 32in model would cost less than $400.
While not designed to display HD images, the SDTV sets will offer DVD-quality pictures from terrestrial broadcasts and are ideal for receiving multiple additional streams of standard-definition programming when transmitted by a local broadcaster, he told lawmakers.
