Report details station’s use of WiMAX for HD contribution from convention

The use of a WiMAX network by KMGH-TV, the ABC affiliate in Denver, to upload 1Mb/s HD news reports from the Democratic National Convention last month is detailed in a new report made available by Research and Markets.

While written primarily for WiMAX and video conferencing vendors, telecommunications service providers and telecommunications investors, the report, "Obama, WiMAX and 1Mb/s HDTV at the 2008 Democratic National Convention," presents a case study of the station’s use of the WiMAX network to file HD news reports. Written by Frank Ohrtman, whose WMX Systems implemented and operated the WiMAX application for KMGH, the report also offers broader insight on the role of WiMAX for HD transport.

Findings include:

  • HDTV over WiMAX services are estimated to achieve as much as $12.5 billion market value by 2014.
  • WiMAX vendors will learn that HDTV is a lucrative niche market for those willing to focus on it
  • The TV broadcast industry is now free from expensive satellite or microwave trucks to support newsgathering.
  • Anyone with a digital video camera, the appropriate encoding/decoding device and a WiMAX connection can gather the same reports live and distribute via the Internet, thus breaking a near monopoly on broadcast spectrum, distribution and infrastructure.
