Retail value of digital terrestrial STBs to skyrocket, says report
The worldwide retail value of all digital terrestrial TV (DTT) set-top boxes (STBs) will jump next year skyrocketing the value to $10 billion during 2009, according to market researcher In-Stat.
Australia currently purchases the greatest number of HDTV DTT STBs, followed North America, according to findings in the newly released “Digital Terrestrial TV Set Top Boxes – Finally, The Market Blasts Off!” from market research firm In-Stat.
Europe is poised to become the long-term dominating force if the 2006 World Cup Football matches drive strong uptake for new DTT products, while Japan and China have emerging markets for DTT STBs that support HD.
In-Stat also found:
- A greater number of countries are turning on local DTT broadcasts, and this trend is beginning to accelerate;
- In the United States, USDTV is tying together the bit streams of up to six local DTT stations, and offering a low-cost alternative to cable TV services;
- The next phase of development is focused on advanced STBs that support new video codecs and include hard disk drives and support for personal video recorders (PVRs);
- China is expected to turn on its local DTT services during 2007, and this will drive large unit shipments of entry-level HDTV STBs in 2008 and 2009.
