RF Shorts: Other Items of Interest - Jan. 8, 2010
Here are a few of the articles that appeared on the Web prior to the official CES opening on Thursday:
- • Earthtimes' article Man Does Not Live By Search Alone: At CES, Cydle to Show M7 Mobile Internet Device, Combining Mobile TV, Multimedia Player (and More) with Net Search Appliance. The device also includes an HD Radio receiver and sports a 7-inch screen. It's expected to sell for $199 in 2Q2010.
- • The Los Angeles Times business section has good review of what ATSC mobile DTV can provide in the article Networks serving up digital TV to go.
- • Further north, the San Francisco Chronicle's "Tech Chronicles" article CES2010: Mobile Digital TV is finally ready for its close-up has this comment from author Ryan Kim: "I, for one, am looking forward to the option," Kim said. "Right now, there are existing options but they are paid services like MobiTV or Flo TV. This could make it easy to tune into local programming from a variety of devices. Cable companies could also offer their content on a paid level by offering it through local broadcasters."
- • PC Magazine's article What to Expect at CES lists Mobile DTV at #3 on its top trends, just behind 3DTV and tablet PCs and before Web-to-TV set-top boxes.
- • Valup's "Tivit" ATSC mobile DTV to Wi-Fi adapter attracted a great deal of press. CNET author John P. Falcone's article Tivit streams Mobile DTV to your iPhone, BlackBerry, and PC noted that the Tivit should hit the American market during this spring and will sell somewhere between $90 and $120. "We'd like to see the price on the lower end of that spectrum to further delineate the Tivit from the Slingbox (which also lets you stream TV to a variety of mobile devices)," said Falcone. "Still, we could see the Tivit becoming a handy peripheral for on-the-go couch potatoes—assuming we see more DTV Mobile stations popping up to supply the necessary content."
- • Berryreview.com talks about the Tivit's ability to enable mobile DTV on a Blackberry Wi-Fi equipped device in Mobile TV Accessory Tivit Coming to BlackBerry this Spring. The comments are as interesting as the article.
- • Engadget has great pictures of the Tivit in the article Tivit promises to bring Mobile DTV to the iPhone and other WiFi-equipped mobile devices. Author Ross Miller adds, "The Mobile DTV standard is official, sure, but the device selection at this point isn't what we'd call plentiful or even appealing—so leave it to CES to attract a virtually unknown company with an attractive alternative."
This is just a small sample of the press reports on mobile DTV at CES. Look for more throughout CES.
