Rogers Cable Launches VOD in Canada
With its initial deployment to 1,000 customers in Toronto, Rogers Cable recently became the first Canadian cable company to provide video-on-demand (VOD). Rogers customers will be able to rent from a library of movies and other programming through their digital set-top boxes with VCR functionality. The offering is the latest in a series of iTV services being provided by the company.
Additional customers will be added later to the Toronto deployment. The company plans to make the service available to 90 percent of its customers in Ontario by the end of 2003.
Initial content will be provided by Alliance Atlantis Motion Picture Distribution, which represents U.S. studios such as Miramax, New Line and Artisan Films. Additional content such as television series, documentaries and concerts will be added later.
