Samsung LED Backlit Sets Shipping Soon
Samsung has been mass-producing its ultra-slim LCD HD panels that include integrate LED (light emitting diode) "backlighting" and after a few false starts as far as shipment announcements, it now says the large, thin screens should begin appearing at retailers in North America by early to mid-summer.
The so-called edge-lit LED backlighting process produces a slimmer panel than traditional direct-lit LED LCD panels. Samsung has produced LED backlit models in the recent past, albeit of the smaller variety and not for mass consumption.
The typical width of its large edge-lit LED backlit models will be less than 11 millimeters, Samsung said, and will be lighter than typical LCD large screens—targeted to consumers wishing to wall-mount their units.
The LED-backlit models also appear to be a bit greener in approach—with as much as 40 percent less energy consumption for a 55-inch LCD panel, compared with conventional LCD sets, said Samsung.
Besides the 55-inch model, Samsung's mass production of its edge-lit LED backlit series for now also will include 40- and 46-inch models.
