SBE Names Committee Chairmen

INDIANAPOLIS and PITTSBURGH: The Society of Broadcast Engineers named its committee chairs for the coming year, while the Pittsburgh chapter opted out of its annual equipment expo this year.

Pittsburgh Chapter 20 Chairman Paul Byers, director of engineering for WQED-TV, told members in the chapter’s latest newsletter that the expo was dropped on account of the “challenging economy,” which made it impossible to sign up enough vendors to make an expo financially viable.

“As you know, we depend on the revenue from this show to fund our monthly meetings and special programs and seminars throughout the year, so we may have to reevaluate those as well,” he wrote.

Byers also asked members to share input with them about future meetings and events. The chapter’s next regular meeting focuses on “Migrating to HD Satellite Newsgathering,” with a presentation by Gil Hanna of Near Field Communications in Pittsburgh.

The national SBE held a meeting earlier this month at which its 2009-10 officers were announced by the new president, Vinny Lopez. They are:
